More Information on Tomahawk Steak

While it can sometimes be difficult to find a bone-in beef cut on the market today, Tom Hixson of Smithfield is proud to offer a wide range of tomahawk steaks sourced from the finest producers around the world. Our selection of tomahawk steaks comes from both grain and grass-fed herds, offering plenty of choice for the connoisseurs.

If you’re looking to impress guests, try our top-of-the-range Salt Moss Dry Aged Tomahawk Steak. Sometimes referred to as the ‘king of steak’, this fantastic cut offers a depth of flavour that is unmatched by many other beef cuts. The bone left in means this makes a great party centrepiece.

For something smaller, perhaps if you are cooking for one, try our Wexford Valley Mini Tomahawk Steak. This smaller cut offers the same impressive look as many of our other bone-in steaks, just on a smaller scale. The incredible marbling on this steak results in a tender mouthfeel and buttery flavour that pairs beautifully with buttery potatoes and grilled or sautéed vegetables.

In our Tomahawk Steak collection, we also offer the regular-sized Wexford Valley Tomahawk Steak, as well as the Halal Ex Dairy Tomahawk Steak, and the Aberdeen Angus Tomahawk Steak.

If you want to order delicious collections of steak boxes, BBQ boxes and much more, order online from Tom Hixson. We work with many award-winning producers to ensure our customers can get everything they need from our wholesale butchers.

What is a Tomahawk Steak?

Tomahawk steak, also known as bone-in ribeye, is a cut of beef known for its impressive shape and size. This beef cut became popular in Texas, but its large size and axe-like shape have meant the steak is now popular across the globe. You will usually see tomahawk steaks served in fine-dining restaurants and as next-level dinner party centrepieces.

What Cut Of Steak is a Tomahawk?

A tomahawk steak is cut from the fore rib with the bone left on. The bone releases its flavours during cooking for added flavour. This, combined with the intermuscular fat content, results in a superb-tasting steak. The tomahawk is usually shared due to its size and weight.

What Does Tomahawk Steak Taste Like?

Tomahawk steak has a rich, melt-in-your-mouth buttery flavour. This is down to the fat content, which renders down and infuses the meat. The large bone also flavours the meat during the cooking process. Our Tom Hixson Tomahawk boasts a sweeter flavour, which comes from the cattle’s chocolate-supplemented diet.

What’s So Special About Tomahawk Steak?

The impressive axe-like bone offers a unique look, which makes this cut of beef special, and popular among fine-dining establishments. The impressive presentation makes the tomahawk ideal for impressing friends and family at your next get-together.

Is Tomahawk Steak Better Than Ribeye?

This comes down to presentation, cooking time, and texture preferences. Both offer a delicious, buttery flavour profile. The tomahawk is slightly harder to cook and will take slightly longer to cook due to its size, however, this results in beef that is a little more succulent than ribeye.

How Do You Eat Tomahawk Steak?

Most tomahawk steaks will be served with the bone on. Start by cutting the bone away from the meat by running your knife along the side of the bone. Once separated, eat a tomahawk like you would any other steak by slicing and cutting it into smaller pieces.

How Many Tomahawk Steaks Are in a Cow?

Cattle have 13 pairs of ribs in total, which means 14 tomahawk steaks can be butchered from one cow. Some butchers don’t use every rib, so they won’t get as many tomahawks, and instead use some ribs for other steak cuts, such as ribeyes.

How Do You BBQ Tomahawk Steak?

Cook your seasoned tomahawk on direct heat for around 5 minutes per side. Once your steak has developed light grill marks, move to indirect heat and cook for a further 15 minutes, or until the steak is done to your liking. You could use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature of your steak.

How Do You Cook Tomahawk Steak in the Oven?

Try the reverse searing method to help bring out the meat’s incredible flavours. Cook your steak in the oven at 110°C for around one hour. Once the time is up, take your meat out of the oven whilst you heat oil or butter in a hot pan. Cook your steak in the hot pan on both sides until a delicious crust forms on the steak. Take out and leave to rest for a few minutes before slicing, serving, and enjoying!

What Goes With Tomahawk Steak?

Serve tomahawk steak alongside homemade chunky cut chips, lightly grilled seasonal vegetables, or a fresh salad with a tangy dressing.
